When you organise events yourself you expect a lot from your own corporate ‘excursion’. After many weeks of being on tenterhooks, we were, naturally, happy that we could finally get on the bus on 11 December and that the ‘unknown destination’ would soon become known.
When we arrived at Stadslandgoed De Kemphaan in Almere, it turned out that the Blue Projects and Blue Building teambuilding day would have a special twist this year. Instead of all the attention being focused on our own team, the team was put to work to do something for others. That is when you are really made to work as a team! This is the reason why today we were at the woodwork workshop of Triade De Kemphaan where, currently, around 20 mentally impaired people and 4 work supervisors make all sorts of things ranging from picnic tables to bird houses. The workshop offers possibilities to work individually on your own development and skills. From this workshop you can move up and find a job in trade and industry whilst being supervised. De Kemphaan is a part of the triAde association that offers housing facilities and day activities to people with an impairment in the widest sense of the word.
We were welcomed very warmly by Ben Blommestein, one of the four work supervisors, and his boys. He told us what we should expect: to roll up our sleeves and get cracking! We used our creative minds to produce art, to install a kitchen unit, to paint walls in the studio and to build a radio studio for DJ Stefan Bakker, who played music during the activities. We also made work tables and were in charge of the catering. We did this all together with the boys. The greatest bit, however, were the two special log cabins that we put together because we did not just do the work but also paid for them. In the name of our dear colleague Richard who passed away recently.
The day concluded with mulled wine and appetisers around the fire accompanied by family musician Jose Dos Santos da Conceicao. It was a fantastic day during which the “functional” was combined with the “pleasant”. We would like to thank you boys!
